1812 fue el año en que Napoleón empezó a retirar tropas de la península para llevarlas a Rusia. El Emperador pretendía mantenerse a la defensiva en España para retomar la iniciativa una vez que hubiera derrotado al Zar. José I había quedado oficialmente al mando de las tropas imperiales. Sin embargo, el mayor de los Bonaparte carecía de autoridad real sobre los mariscales que mandaban los distintos ejércitos y entre estos últimos reinaban las rivalidades. Para empeorar aún más las cosas, Napoleón seguía dirigiendo la guerra desde la distancia. Wellington, con Ciudad Rodrigo ya en su poder, aprovechó la situación para tomar la ofensiva y poner por tercera vez sitio a Badajoz la otra puerta de España viniendo desde Portugal. La toma de la plaza resultó más sangrienta de lo previsto, pero al final, en abril de aquel año, la ciudad extremeña cayó en manos aliadas. El panorama estratégico en la península dio un vuelco, a partir de entonces los imperiales se vieron abocados a reaccionar a los movimientos de su oponente y el general inglés podía elegir la meseta del Duero o Andalucía para dar su siguiente golpe, manteniendo la otra avenida protegida por importantes fortificaciones.
