G. K. Chesterton y Bernard Shaw fueron grandes amigos pero se pasaron buena parte de sus vidas discutiendo y polemizando sobre casi todo. Para Chesterton, la filosofía y la política de Shaw, así como su teatro, eran un perfecto ejemplo de las ideas dominantes en su tiempo, el emergente siglo XX, con las que estaba en franco desacuerdo. Cuando se habla de la Biblia, la mayoría de las veces se alude a la traducción de diversos textos antiguos realizada por un grupo de especialistas que, a pesar de su inexacto conocimiento del hebreo antiguo, confió en poder transmitir al resto de los hombres la sagrada Palabra de Dios. Preocupado por la infinidad de posibles incongruencias o errores de contenido resultantes de este hecho, el Premio Nobel de Literatura George Bernard Shaw (Irlanda, 1856 ? 1950) escribió el presente relato, en el que una muchacha africana, recientemente convertida al cristianismo, se cuestiona acerca de la existencia divina. En el notable epílogo que acompaña al volumen, el autor y crítico dublinés expresó: En esta confusión me permito sugerir que impidamos a la Biblia encumbrarse y asimismo no emprendamos la imposible tarea de suprimirla. ¿Por qué no simplemente aterrizar y tomarla como lo que es?
