En este volumen de homenaje al profesor Fernández Corte hemos recogido algunos de sus artículos inéditos y una mínima parte de las conferencias que pronunció a lo largo de su dilatada trayectoria académica. Somos conscientes de que en el paso de la comunicación oral a la escrita se producen pérdidas; sobre todo se pierde la capacidad que siempre ha tenido José Carlos Fernández Corte para cautivar a sus oyentes con la palabra: permanece la "inventio" y la "dispositio", pero no su "eloquentia", el impacto inmediato de las palabras, de los tonos y matices que llevan al auditorio al deleite, la admiración, la sorpresa o la risa. Como decía Cicerón: "Is est enim eloquens, qui et humilia subtiliter et alta graviter et mediocria temperate potest dicere" (Orator 100). En gran medida esa riqueza de registros ha desaparecido en el nuevo formato y también sus efectos. Hemos ganado a cambio la permanencia de los mensajes que transmiten sus palabras, con su inagotable caudal de conocimientos y sugerencias, y también que lleguen a quienes no tuvieron la ocasión o la oportunidad de asistir a los actos o cursos en los que aquellas fueron pronunciadas.
