Redactada aproximadamente entre 1304 y 1321 e impresa por primera vez en 1472, la obra magna de Dante Alighieri refleja su ingente personalidad como poeta, político, filósofo y hombre de su época. Dante narra en primera persona su peregrinaje, guiado por Virgilio, a través del mundo de ultratumba, desde el subterráneo Infierno, donde recorre los nueve círculos en los que los condenados expían sus culpas, hasta el Purgatorio y el Paraíso. Infierno, Purgatorio y Paraíso son las tres partes que, desde el punto de vista formal, estructuran los cien cantos que componen esta monumental obra maestra.Publicada por primera vez en Seix Barral entre los años 1973 y 1977, la traducción de Ángel Crespo fue elogiada unánimemente por los italianistas españoles y los hispanistas italianos y recibió en 1979 el Premio de los Libreros y Lectores italianos y en 1980 la Medalla de Oro de la Nascita di Dante, que concede la ciudad de Florencia. La conservación en castellano del terceto encadenado del original fue sentida por Crespo como indispensable en una obra para la que su autor había elegido esta forma estrófica, íntimamente unida a su significado global y depositaria de una parte de sus claves. Su trasvase metrificado y rimado de la Comedia dantesca depara al lector un verdadero Dante castellano, difícil cúspide de la exigencia y de la más sutil maestría expresiva.
