La ingeniería genética ha abierto la Caja de Pandora de nuestros temores ancestrales. En la confusión nos hemos visto obligados a legislar rápida y desordenadamente sobre temas de una dificultad tecnológica y conceptual más que considerable. Uno de los retos más importantes a los que ha tenido que enfrentarse la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos, formulada en una época en la que la ingeniería genética apenas balbuceaba, poniendo a prueba su validez, es el de su adaptación al progreso tecnológico. Es cierto que en ella no se encuentra un artículo específico que reconozca el patrimonio genético humano como algo inmodificable, pero sí se encuentran los principios que deben tenerse en cuenta a la hora de tomar las decisiones más controvertidas: el derecho a la intimidad, el derecho al reconocimiento de la personalidad jurídica, el derecho a la libertad de conciencia, etc. En definitiva la Declaración es un texto útil que ha de ser enriquecido permanentemente actualizándolo.
