El Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) alberga estos y otros instrumentos científicos con los que podemos conocer mejor la historia de esta institución y la historia de la ciencia de nuestro país. Se trata de instrumentos, aparatos y artilugios sin los cuales científicos y educadores no podrían haber llevado a cabo sus aportaciones al avance y a la transmisión del conocimiento. Constituyen un valioso referente material y, en ocasiones, la única fuente histórica de determinadas líneas de investigación. Este libro quiere dar a conocer la relevancia para la historia de la ciencia española de una treintena de aparatos, seleccionados de entre más de mil, que forman parte del patrimonio histórico del organismo público de investigación más importante de España. Su propósito no es solo mostrar el valor científico, tecnológico e histórico de los instrumentos, sino también contribuir a la sensibilización de la sociedad para con su estudio y conservación. Diseñados para un propósito científico determinado, eran aparatos situados en la vanguardia tecnológica de su tiempo y fueron piezas imprescindibles en los distintos trabajos de investigación y descubrimientos protagonizados por los científicos Catalán, Moles, Cabrera, Ramón y Cajal, Navarro Tomás o Torres Quevedo y por las científicas Pilar de Madariaga y Felisa Martín.
