What is God like? The answer depends on the imagination of those we ask. Some of those answers are not very healthy—especially for children! Many ideas and images of God are harmful, such as the angry God who threatens us. Or the distant God who is not there when we need him. Or the magical God who will grant our wishes if we are good enough or beg hard enough. Such ideas of God make it hard for us to love God with our whole heart or to let God love us. God noticed this problem. God wanted us to know what God is really like. So God decided to do something. What’s the best way for God to tell us what God is like? By showing us—in person! And that is exactly what God did! God came into our world as Jesus Christ. Jesus is what God has to say about Godself. What did Jesus show us about God? Jesus showed us that God is Love! Not just any kind of love. God is perfect love that never stops loving. Jesus showed us this in so many ways. The four gospels, written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, tell us that story. They tell us how Jesus showed us God. Everything Jesus said and did was about this message: God is Love.God loves everyone, and that means God loves you. Each page of this book shares the gospel story of God’s love, seen in Jesus. What is God like? Jesus showed us! Jesus showed us God is Love! * This book is suitable a 16-week Sunday School study on Jesus (1 page/lesson). When I was the father of three little girls, I used to read the Bible to them at bedtime. It was one of the favorite moments of my day, and these moments now stand as some of my most cherished memories. Because some of the words were difficult for a child to understand, I did some “on the fly” editing, changing words or phrases to something they could comprehend. The Psalms did not hold the intrigue and suspense of many of the narrative sections of the Bible, but they still held the seeds of poetry that sprouted into delight. The Psalms began to shape the concept of God these children were hiding in their hearts. When reading the Psalms, I wanted to respect the meaning of the text and use the language other translators had created, but find a way to connect with the girls I knew and loved best. Most of all, I wanted them to grow to love the Bible as I did. I hoped they would hear the majestic praises, heartfelt laments, and exhortations to righteousness that are found in the Psalms and “hide them in their hearts so they would not sin against God.” These daughters are grown and out of the house now, studying at their universities or divinity schools, and still reading in their beds at night just as I am. Now that I am having my first ever sabbatical after 27 years of ministry in local churches, I wanted to take some time to convert some of those memories into written treasures for other parents, children, and grandchildren. That’s why I’ve created this book of Psalms with illustrations. I have extracted 25 of some of the most memorable, powerful, and child-friendly Psalms in the Bible and edited them in such a way that they will be comprehended by a child. Appreciating the diversity of the Psalms, I made an intentional effort to include all kinds of Psalms: praise, thanksgiving, lamentation, confession, wisdom, and trust. I have attempted to paraphrase these Psalms, using language and imagery appropriate for children, while remaining faithful to the spirit of these texts. Some explanatory notes along with some conversation questions are included in the back for those who might find these useful. My hope is that you will create your own special moments of reading and talking about God and the Bible with your own children, grandchildren, or any young person you love.

Having taught elementary?aged Sunday School students for many years, ?Sandee Freese realized that most curricula usually just teach individual stories of the Bible, without connecting them to God?s overall plan of redemption through Jesus, the Messiah, our Savior.? This disconnect has caused generations to be denied the depth and breadth of the Scriptures which would anchor their faith in times of testing. ?Could this be one reason why so many of our youth are leaving the Faith when they graduate from high school or college? To help combat this problem, Mrs. Freese wrote The Core Mystery specifically to show the connection of Old Testament stories to Jesus and His plan of redemption."The Core Mystery" explains the Christian faith to kids from 3rd through 5th grades and connects the Old Testament to Jesus Christ and God's plan of salvation fulfilled in him.
Learning self-control takes time and practice. You don't all of a sudden become disciplined and able to handle all of life's temptations. Learning why and how to control your emotions and actions can make a big difference. Enjoy some activities such as mazes, word puzzles, quizzes and coloring, as you learn more about self-control. As you begin to control yourself in one area, you will notice that it gets easier and you build up confidence to use self-control in other areas too. "Try hard to gain ability to control yourselves, and strength to keep going." (1 Peter 1:5-6) Suggested for ages 7-10. For more kids products and downloads, visit our website at www.icharacter.org
