El tema y el género de la obra explica Lumbreras los determinó el homenaje debido a Ramón Gómez de la Serna, autor cuyo descubrimiento fue decisivo en mi vocación literaria. El protagonista de mi primera obra debía ser aquel escritor facundo y fecundo que fumaba en pipa cornucopia; el ser inadaptado que optó por adaptar a sí el mundo, rebautizándolo palabra por palabra en un breviario que se llamó «ramonismo»; el noctámbulo fetichista que gustaba de rodearse de objetos y «a falta de mujeres-objeto» de algún objeto-mujer como su bella maniquí de cera. En cuanto a la forma de su tributo, ¿qué mejor homenaje a Ramón que hacerlo resucitar ante el público, tal como era, tal como hablaba, con su conferencia-maleta, sus emisiones de radio caseras, su maniquí de cera, su concurrido torreón de Velázquez fusionado en la obra con el secreto sancta sanctorum de su estudio?
