La obra del físico francés Pierre Duhem ha sido reconocida después de muchos años en los círculos intelectuales no católicos. Sin embargo, demasiado a menudo, en dichos círculos se da una visión bastante sesgada cuando no totalmente falseada de sus aportaciones en el terreno de la física y más aún en el de la filosofía y la historia. El testimonio -profundamente vivido e impregnado de su fe católica- se silencia y cuando se menciona va acompañado de clichés peyorativos o condescendientes. Pero Duhem molesta también a ciertos intelectuales católicos que sólo buscan complacer a sus adversarios y no dar razón y testimonio de su fe en momentos de increencia y de apoteosis científica. El que hayan sido tan pocos los que han escuchado a Duhem, incluso en su propia familia espiritual, es una prueba más, y ciertamente esclarecedora, de que es uno de los profetas de los tiempos modernos. La obra del sabio francés se desconoce casi por completo en castellano. Traer algo de su pensamiento a nuestra lengua ha sido el motivo principal de esta traducción, que consta de dos partes. En la primera de ellas, el padre Jaki traza una semblanza del gran científico francés; en la segunda recoge pasajes de algunas de sus obras, cartas y alocuciones.
