Este libro es el resultado de una fructífera y dilatada experiencia, por parte de los investigadores que lo han hecho posible, en el ámbito del análisis de la identidad andaluza, cuestión que se afronta en este volumen desde planteamientos culturales híbridos y transversales, que ponen la atención en cómo se miró desde Andalucía y en cómo la miraron desde otras regiones y países. Esta publicación parte del proyecto de investigación "Identidad y Construcción Cultural de Andalucía: Arte y Turismo (1839-1939) (HAR2016-79758-P)", del Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad.
Francis Bacon es una de las figuras icónicas del arte del siglo xx, un artista que transformó la manera en que vemos y experimentamos el cuerpo humano. A la manera de los trípticos de Bacon, Jonathan Littell, apasionado de la obra del pintor, divide su libro en tres partes, a la vez independientes y complementarias. En la primera, describe el día que pasa en el museo del Prado mirando las telas de Bacon, no muy lejos de las de Velázquez y Goya. La segunda revela las correspondencias ocultas entre las figuras que Bacon pinta a lo largo de su carrera. Los retratos de su amante, George Dryer, pintados poco antes del suicidio de este en 1971, son el hilo conductor de esta reflexión. La tercera parte pone en perspectiva la pintura de Bacon y la de los iconos, con el fin de abordar la cuestión de la representación de la verdad en la pintura. El libro incluye un centenar de ilustraciones escogidas por Jonathan Littell.
