A principios del siglo XVII surgieron en Europa las cartillas de dibujo, unos materiales pedagógicos que revolucionaron la metodología tradicional de la enseñanza de esta disciplina, permitiendo a artistas, aficionados y particulares progresar sin la presencia de un maestro, sobre todo en la representación del cuerpo humano. Su principal novedad radicaba en el empleo del grabado: a partir de esquematizaciones, proporciones o líneas de contornos y sombreados, y mediante la copia directa y repetitiva, el alumno asimilaba un método, una manera y un estilo determinados, memorizando sus gestos y mejorando su destreza. La exposición a la que acompaña este catálogo destaca los ejemplos españoles de los siglos XVII-XIX y los sitúa en el contexto europeo. Aunque su número fue reducido, su interés resulta excepcional, pues desde el principio destacaron por su carácter autóctono y, en ocasiones, novedoso. Junto a artistas como Villafranca, García Hidalgo y López Enguídanos descuella Ribera, que ya en 1622 había comenzado a estampar lo que parecía iba a ser su propia cartilla y que no se publicó hasta décadas después.
