Hoy en día, el arte puede ser leído, gracias a las incontables publicaciones especializadas y a los encuentros que congrega a decenas de expertos de todo el mundo. La Bienal de La Habana no escapa a este fenómeno actual de la lectura, porque desde su fundación en 1984, reúne un espectro amplio de personalidades con el propósito de intercambiar ideas y reflexiones acerca de numerosos aspectos del arte contemporáneo. Los textos presentados en el presente volumen fueron solicitados a notables teóricos, expertos, críticos, profesores, incluso a artistas decididos a compartir ideas y experiencias, a lo largo de veinticinco años. Agrupados siguiendo una coherencia entre sus problemáticas, la mayoría fueron leídos por sus autores frente al público participante de los encuentros de teoría y crítica, mientras que otros fueron extraídos de los catálogos de las bienales.
